New artist portfolios are thrown aside into stacks - while they are important, they're not URGENT. And if something is not urgent, then other tasks tend to take priority.
A lot of commentators will tell you the answer to getting noticed is sending in very professionally prepared portfolios. It's not. Being professional is always a good thing, but, frankly, we didn't care what the portfolio looked like. An envelope full of snapshots was fine because the determining factor for acceptance was the artwork itself....not the presentation of the portfolio.
And here's what makes the situation even worse - if you call ahead about your portfolio, you're just interrupting someone with all those other tasks to do - so that's not really a good idea. Let's say you had a deadline to finish several Gallery Oil Paintings for a show by the end of this week. One of the manifestations of 'The World of Art' was a new preoccupation with folklore and myth. Aivazovskiy had, uncharacteristically, painted at least two such otherworldly pictures. One was 'Poseidon's Sea Journey' of 1894. The great god and his consort ride on a green-tinged wave in a chariot drawn by four horses.
Fairy tales were part of the new experimental milieu of the early twentieth century, and the young Armenian painter Martiros Saryan produced a cycle of fabulous paintings called 'Fairy Tales and Dreams' for the "Blue Rose" exhibition in Moscow in 1907. Among them was a compelling Gallery Oil Paintings 'Lake of Fairies', in which two women bathe in a limpid pale blue pool with the hint of a large grotto farther back, below a hanging wood of predominantly blue forest; a goat in the foreground grazes behind a little grove of trees.

Although painting in Russia and elsewhere abandoned realism, and as landscape painting became an amateur activity, depictions of water became problematic. Yet in the immensely stylised work of Ivan Bilibin of the inter-war years, water becomes part of the decorative pattern, as in his 'Falcon' of 1927 and 'Underwater Kingdom' of the same year. The former is a formal, decorative version of a standard bird's-eye view of a river delta.
In many ways the real lead was about to be offered by a brilliant young graduate of the Academy, Ivan Aivazovskiy , whose long life in painting from the 1830s to the end of the century was obsessively devoted to painting that greatest body of water on earth, the sea.
So, having thought this through, as a former gallery owner, here are our recommendations for getting your work noticed by galleries, 5 Steps To Get Your Artwork Noticed by Galleries:
1. Identify your target galleries. Do NOT just send your portfolio to every gallery you see advertised. Look in magazines, look online and identify several galleries that might be possibilities. Each gallery you decide to target should meet the following criteria.
2. Honestly assess the level and quality of your artwork and the artwork carried by your target galleries. Is you goal realistic? Are you targeting a gallery who represents master painters and you've been painting for a total of six months? This is a difficult step, but you definitely need to target galleries who are at the same "level" as you. We're not saying not to be ambitious, but at our Gallery Oil Paintings we represented very fine and respected artists and regularly turned away artists who hadn't yet mastered drawing, perspective, color mixing, etc.
3.Go through each gallery's roster of artists looking for artists whom you personally know. If you really are at the same "level" as the artists in your target galleries, chances are you will have at least met some of them.
4. Ask your artist friend if the gallery would like your work. Just ask. This is someone who knows you and the gallery....they'll give you an honest answer. It will be easier to accept hear the truth from your friend than it will be to get a rejection letter from the gallery.
5. If possible, have your friend send the portfolio. Simply give the portfolio to your friend, ask him to write on a post-it note "this is the artist I told you about" and send it.
Every career is a lot of work and being an artist is no different. If your career is worth it, then the work is worth it.
At a time when funding for arts education is being cut in favor of math and language arts, it’s important to realize all that the arts can do for our children. Art builds the imagination, fosters creativity and problem solving, and develops fine motor skills. Art can teach kids many important lessons:
- Develop eye-hand coordination - Observe the world around them, and learn to trust their own eyes rather than what they think they “should” see or know - Make comparisons and make choices, distinguish between what’s important and what isn’t - Improve by practicing, and take pride in their artistic growth and development - Develop an understanding of what goes into making a work of art-helping them appreciate the work of other artists
According to Americans for the Arts, children who regularly take art classes are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. They also point out that art classes help kids stay out of trouble and away from destructive influences.
But did you know that art also helps to develop language skills for reading and writing and the cognitive skills needed for math? Participating in the arts helps children learn to focus, to listen, and to be tolerant of new ideas and different people. The arts also help kids learn the value of doing a good job for its own sake, of taking pride in their work, and of setting goals for themselves and reaching those goals.
Drawing and painting are excellent and enjoyable ways for kids of all ages to become involved in art. Many kids think they “can’t draw Gallery Oil Paintings” because their drawings don’t look exactly like real things. Yes it all came from Japan. Some of the ideas came from Laozi, a philosopher and the founder of Taoism, who held to the “aesthetic ideal of emptiness”. Designers in the Bauhaus and elsewhere saw Japanese tea sets and writing sets all of which would look fine in one of todays so called contemporary spaces.
I sometimes think the whole modernist movement is the avoidance of criticism. If you merely splash paint randomly on your canvas, or paint it a single colour or one colour with two stripes then you are reducing the number of things that can be criticised. With no reference points no concrete judgement can be made. If I draw a Gallery Oil Paintings this is not the case, proportion, economy of line, quality of line, tonal arrangement, relation of the figure to the page, character, balance of light and shade, the list is really depressingly long! With a minimalist painting with only a fews elements the placing of those features is inevitably overwhelmingly important, which is why in my opinion good minimalist painters are so vanishingly thin on the ground.
One of my own experiences in the design world is that if you put anything interesting in it will be commented on, if it gets commented on people will have opinions, those opinions will differ and whatever was interesting will get cut. Something that inspires no comment will however slip by without really being considered. This all promotes a blank grey average which we can see today all around us. Partially it is due to democracy. We have this idea that if we take a broad spread of opinions about something and average them it will result in an improvement. This is not the case however with art or design. Much in the same way if you took everyone’s favourite colour and mixed them together you would not come up with anything other than muddy greeny grey.
Contemporary art tends to discourage intelligent opinions. People are reduced to saying, “Oh a child could do it!” often not because they are stupid or unsophisticated, but because the work itself has shut out all possibility of a worthwhile stance to take in regard to it. For me if it is not possible for a viewer to inhabit a work in some way, then it is poorly done.
Oil paints may have been used as far back as the 13th century. However as a medium in its modern form, Belgian painter, Jan van Eyck, developed it during the 15th century. As evidenced by the innumerable masterpieces Gallery Oil Paintings exhibited on gallery walls of the most prestigious museums worldwide, perhaps it is the medium of oil that has created the most significant impact on the development of painting as visual art form. The refinement of oil painting came through studies in perspective, proportion and human anatomy. During the Renaissance, the goal for artists was to create realistic images. They sought to represent all that was caught by an artist’s detailed eye, as well as capture and present the intensity of human emotions.
Easily removed from the canvas, oil allows the artist to revise a work. With its flexible nature, long history and large body of theories, oil painting has created a most significant impact on visual art. New developments in oil paints continued into the 20th century, with advent of oil paint sticks, which were used by artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Anselm Kiefer. Since the Renaissance, the masters used oil to create works that continue to inspire, intrigue and delight, and today, artists continue to use this significant medium to express their visions, goals and emotions.
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni's father sent him for formal schooling, but Michelangelo preferred copying paintings in churches. He later befriended arts and studied with some of the great painter and sculptors of his time. But he thought that he could learn more by copying the masters.
In museums around the world, you can see artists creating copies paintings. In Louvre in Paris, you can see a stream of artists copying their great paintings. Copying masterpieces has been a cornerstone of traditional art education for a long time. In fact, one art course you can take at The New York Academy of Art in New York City, NY, USA consists of students walking a few blocks to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA) and copying paintings. That is the course!
I have done copies of paintings at MMA New York City of Gallery Oil Paintings by Theodore Gericault (French Romantic Painter, 1791-1824) and Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (Spanish Baroque Era Painter, 1599 - 1660).
Artists at MMA who want to make copies make a request to MMA's Education Department. The Museum allows artists to get exclusive use for a month to one room or gallery in the museum to do a copy of a specific painting. The public still has access, but only one artist is allowed to copy in that gallery. I highly recommend your doing the same.
Museums vary in permitting artists to do copies. In New York City, USA, the MMA does, but the Frick Collection and the Museum of Modern Art do not. Check with your museum.
